The Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University is launching a Women’s Peacebuilding Leadership Program specifically tailored to women who are oriented toward social change and who wish to develop their abilities to lead the cause of peace and justice in their regions of the world.

Is there a place for nonviolent action in our world? The 2012 Lake Junaluska Peace Conference, “Love in Action: The Transformative Power of Nonviolence,” will draw upon the lessons of nonviolent campaigns and their leaders who discovered a force that can change the world.

UM Reporter: The first attempt resulted in 14 groups being formed, each with one Jewish couple, one Muslim couple and one Christian couple—agreeing to have three meals together; one meal in the home of each couple.

She saw only too clearly the fragility of peace, saying that peace needs to be nurtured as carefully as an egg. Dekha found deep fulfilment in enabling others to develop their full potential as leaders for peace and justice, never seeking the limelight for herself.

Kuany shared his story of destruction, survival and redemption with a packed auditorium at the World Methodist Council at the Lake Junaluska, (N.C.) Conference and Retreat Center.

In a culture of violence, what has to happen within the political, economic, social, educational and development agendas to engage and enable the reconciliation of communities and individuals? What are the things that make for peace?

Rev. Carol Windrum. a United Methodist pastor in Nebraska, won the People of Faith award for her commitment to peacemaking.

United Methodist Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen were awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for their work on women’s rights.

“I am concerned about the rights of women, the rights of children and, just as equally, the rights of men – because there can never be a community, there can never be a family, there can never be true freedom when any sector of humanity is not free,” she says.
