As school districts across North America – indeed perhaps across the world – struggle with how to enable students to study productively in safe, respectful school environments, more school personnel are checking into restorative justice and asking themselves whether the practices of “RJ” could be applied in their environments.

A group of United Methodist students at American University in Washington, D.C., met hate head-on when members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church came to their campus Jan. 14.

What do you do when hate comes knocking at your door? That was the question that the students, faculty, and staff of American University had to face this past week after they’d learned that protesters from the infamous Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) would be coming to campus.

With horrific stories of cyberbullying and “bullycides” in the news, is there anything Christians can do, other than wring our hands?
Maybe we can start by talking—and listening—to our youth.

“A youth pastor could be the most likely person they will trust. So we have to prepare them to be the trusted adult,” Aftab said. “They need to understand cyberbullying and sexting. They need to understand how the technology works and how it’s abused. You have a precious few minutes to do it right, and if you do it wrong you’ll never hear from them again.”

Summer Grove United Methodist Church hosted a four-person panel of professional experts and high school students to shed light on hassling at school or online. After the talk, the group lit candles to honor and memorialize bullies’ victims.

In the wake of a growing number of teens taking their own lives after suffering from bullying, silence should not be an option, especially in the church, say Baltimore-Washington Conference leaders.
