Lombard Mennonite Peace Center: Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders

Oxford Circle Mennonite Church, Philadelphia, PAWhether in the home, school, community, church or workplace conflict is an inevitable part of life. Having the skills to function effectively in emotionally intense, conflicted situations is important for all of us, especially those of us who are leaders.
The Lombard Mennonite Peace Center has trained hundred of church leaders from a wide range of denominations in the skills that are needed to deal with conflict in the church setting through its Mediation Skills Training Institute.
The Mediation Skills Training Institute equips people for working in various conflicted situations, including church disputes. Participants learn about:
- Biblical foundations-finding renewal in conflict.
- Individual styles of response to conflict.
- Win-win negotiation skills.
- Skills to mediate conflict between individuals.
- Tools to effectively manage congregational conflict.
Skills for serving as an outside consultant to conflicted churches.

Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VAA Symposium on Restorative Justice in Campus Conduct Administration is scheduled for March 15, 2010 on the EMU campus. Sponsored by EMU's Center for Justice and Peacebuilding, James Madison University, and Virginia Tech's Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, the symposium will feature Howard Zehr, phD, and David Karp, phD, both renowned experts in the field. March 16-18 will provide additional training for professionals on Implementing Restorative Justice Practices within CAmpus Conduct Administration (limited to 35 persons.) The events will explore best practices using restorative justice wtih student conduct/judicial affiars, "major threat" cases, including options for behavior assessment teams, and strategies to better focus on identifying and repairing harm, including dialogue with harmed parties. "The Poetics of Peacebuilding", with CJP Co-Founder, John Paul Lederach, will be a 7 p.m. lecture and discussion open to the public. Date/Time/Location: Thursday, April 15, 7:00 p.m. in EMU's Martin Chapel.
John Paul will then provide a two day retreat for current CJP students only on Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17. This will be an opportunity for CJP students to reflect on their role as Peacebuilders and the Peacebuilding field with a leader in the field. The retreat will consider the question that peacebuilding may ultimately find its deepest roots in artistic and spiritual processes.
