Mass Incarceration, Retributive Justice and the Penal Substitution Doctrine of the Atonement

Tom Porter, director of the Program in Religion and Conflict Transformation at Boston University School of Theology and former Executive Director of JustPeace, delivered the 2013 Karl Cron Community Lecture, speakin on “Restorative Justice” as a response to mass incarceration, retributive justice and retributive theology.

A trial lawyer, minister in the United Methodist Church and Journal of Law and Religion Board member, Porter’s work on restorative justice and conflict resolution has included collaborative publication of three books on the topic and active service in conflict resolution of legal and other issues. His education includes degrees from Yale University, Union Theological Seminary and Boston University Law School.
